Naturalist Nights - 'No Place Distant: Roads, Motorized Recreation, and Public Lands'

David G. Havlick is a professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. In this program from the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies, Wilderness Workshop and Roaring Fork Audubon, Dr. Havlick presents a comprehensive and in-depth examination of the more than 550,000 miles of roads that crisscross our national parks, national forests, Bureau of Land Management lands, and wildlife refuges, considering how they came to be; their ecological, financial, and societal costs; and what can be done to ensure that those roads are as environmentally benign and cost-effective as possible, while remaining functional and accessible. ASPEN ALBUM Dick Durrance Ski Film 1966

Dick Durrance, "The Man on The Medal" was a 17-time national championship alpine ski racer and one of the first Americans to compete successfully against Europeans. World War II interrupted international ski racing. Dick was hired to save the languishing Alta ski area, including finishing and operating the Alta Lodge. He pioneered skiing Alta's canyon walls, developing his patented "Dipsy Doodle" turn to gracefully ski the steeps. In 1947, Durrance was hired to manage the Aspen Skiing Company. The struggling company was turned around by Durrance, who brought the 1950 World Championships to Aspen, the first held outside of Europe. It put Aspen on the map and it is now one of the most popular ski resorts in the United States. He also produced a number of ski films with his wife Miggs and devoted most of his life to the promotion of skiing. Aspen Album is Dick's 1966 promotional film for the Aspen Skiing Company that acquaints the viewer with a history of Aspen from the 1880s to the 1960s. Dick shot most of the footage himself over the previous two decades. His son Dave contributed the film to the GrassRoots Community Archive after Dick passed in 2004. "If You Want to Know Aspen, You Have to Watch GrassRoots." Aspen Art Museum 2023-24 Artist Fellowship Presentations

The Aspen Art Museum Artist Fellowship provides a mentored professional development opportunity for six artists (from emerging to established) working in Parachute, Rifle, Silt, New Castle, Glenwood Springs, Gypsum, Eagle, Edwards, Avon, Vail, Marble, Redstone, Carbondale, El Jebel, Basalt, Old Snowmass, Snowmass Village, and Aspen. Providing recognition and support for artists interested in expanding their practice through exchange and mentorship, the nine-month Artist Fellowship group meets for conversations with visiting artists and curators, presentations by AAM staff, and facilitated studio visits with their cohort. Over the course of the fellowship, participating artists develop a creative project with the input of museum staff, culminating in the opportunity to present their work and share their creative process and experiences with the public at the end of the program through an artist talk, performance, demonstration, or other format. This program is those presentations.
